The Idea
A real choice has more than one answer the adult can honestly live with. The options may be bounded, but the child’s decision still changes what happens next. A question with only one acceptable answer is an instruction disguised as a choice.
Good practice happens where the stakes are meaningful but recoverable. Adults still hold health, safety, legal, financial, and family-wide boundaries. Within those limits, children need room to prefer, decide, experience the result, and sometimes choose differently than the adult would.
