A credit economy works when children can earn enough to meaningfully save and spend on things they actually want. There is no single correct rate. Every family’s economy is different. Use this sheet to set values, check the balance, and adjust until the math feels fair. Shaded values are starting suggestions. Click any field to edit. Totals update automatically as you build your economy.
Step 1: Set Values
Task Earnings Credits In
| Task | Credits | Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly Earning Potential | ———— | |
Perk Costs Credits Out
| Perk / Reward | Credits | How Often |
|---|---|---|
| Estimated Weekly Spending | ———— | |
Step 2: Check the Balance
Weekly Earning Potential
—
Total credits child can earn per week
Estimated Weekly Spending
—
Credits typically spent on perks per week
Weekly Net (Earning − Spending)
—
Amount saved per week toward larger goals
Check the description that fits your numbers:
Healthy Surplus
Child earns noticeably more than they spend. Savings build naturally toward larger goals.
Roughly Balanced
Most earnings go directly to perks. Little saving happens. Monitor and adjust perk costs if needed.
Spending Exceeds Earning
Perks cost more than can be earned. Rebalance before you start by increasing task values or lowering perk costs.
Reference: Proposed Exchange Rates
Option A: Tie Credits to Dollars
| Rate | 100 credits = | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | $0.50 | Ages 5–7 |
| Learning | $1.00 | Ages 7–9 |
| Standard | $2.00 | Ages 9–12 |
| Teen | $5.00 | Ages 13+ |
| Your rate |
Tying credits to dollars is one option, not a requirement. Many families keep credits credit-only and find the system works just as well.
Option B: Keep Credits Credit-Only
| Goal Type | Save For | Perk Cost Range |
|---|---|---|
| Quick win | 1–2 days | 10–40 credits |
| Weekly reward | 3–5 days | 50–100 credits |
| Medium goal | 2–3 weeks | 150–400 credits |
| Major reward | 4–8 weeks | 500–1,000 credits |
| Your big goal |
Aim for perks to cost 2–3× a typical single task. This ensures children save meaningfully even while redeeming regularly.
Pricing Principles
Tasks should feel worth the effort
A task that takes 15 minutes should earn noticeably more than one that takes 2. Effort should scale with reward. If it doesn’t, children tend to stop trying on the harder tasks.
Perks should require some patience
If every perk costs less than a single task’s earnings, children often spend everything immediately and don’t build saving habits. Price perks at 2–3× a typical task as a starting point.
Leave room for initiative
Include a few optional extra tasks worth bonus credits. These teach children to go beyond the minimum, and give the economy room to breathe without changing base rates.
